Suppliers of catering equipment and suppliers to McDonald’s have been boosted by news that the fast food giant plans to open more UK stores in 2013 than it did last year.

McDonald’s opened 16 stores in the UK during 2012, but UK chief executive Jill McDonald said this week that it is budgeting for 20 new stores this year.

The expansion will take the total number of outlets it operates to more than 1,200.

With the fast food market remaining as competitive as ever, McDonald said the group would “push up the pace” this year.

The planned openings will create an extra 2,500 jobs in the UK, taking McDonald’s workforce to 93,500 by the end of 2013.

“These remain challenging economic conditions but I’m pleased that, together with our franchisees, our continued focus on serving quality, affordable food and giving our customers a great experience is enabling us to keep investing in our business and creating jobs,” said McDonald.
