Supermarket stint for Williams Refrigeration chief

The boss of the group business that runs Williams Refrigeration has spent a day on the shop floor of one of Britain’s biggest supermarkets to see how the company’s equipment is put to the test.

Tim Smith, CEO of the AFE Group — the Ali Group organisation that counts Williams, Falcon, Mono, Miller’s and Serviceline within its ranks — put in a full shift at a new Sainsbury’s store in Kings Lynn, where Williams is based.

Williams, Mono and Miller’s all have longstanding working associations with Sainsbury’s, with the trio’s equipment found in all Sainsbury’s outlets.

“We work closely with Sainsbury’s around the UK, but it’s always special to supply your home town store, the more so when the products include some of our latest refrigeration technology, such as the fridges and freezers that run on environment-friendly natural refrigerants,” said Smith.

During his shift, Smith went behind the counter of the store’s bakery where he worked with the Mono bread plant, baking ovens and Williams’ advanced Eco Touchscreen retarder provers, which are used to chill and prove the dough for bread and morning goods.

“Working in the store has been quite an eye opener,” said Smith. “It’s a very useful exercise for suppliers and gives us a real and first-hand insight into how Sainsbury’s uses our equipment. The experience day gives us the chance to talk to the bakers and see how we might work with them to make continued improvements and innovations to our equipment."
