Steven Rowley takes the Royal Crown

Steven Rowley is now Royal Crown Derby’s sales and marketing director.

British fine bone china manufacturer Royal Crown Derby has appointed Steven Rowley as its new sales and marketing director.

He joins from Denby Pottery, where he was said to be instrumental in generating significant growth in the brand’s international sales.

With more than 40 years experience in the tabletop and giftware industry, Rowley has been appointed to build on Royal Crown Derby’s growing prominence in the global market. He will drive forward sales of the brand’s existing products and services, as well as supporting new product development that will provide a route into new international territories.

He said: “It is a fantastic opportunity to be joining Royal Crown Derby at such an exciting time for the business. I am passionate about the history and heritage of its exceptional British-made product and the skills of its dedicated craftsman.”

“Recent investment into the factory and team has facilitated greater flexibility, allowing us to create new and innovative products that will allow us to further expand in the international arena.”

Rowley worked his way up from shop floor manager to senior leadership. Working for the first decade of his career in production management, he moved into sales with Staffordshire Tableware in 1985 before going on to work for some of the UK’s biggest tableware and giftware brands in senior sales roles, including Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Waterford and Churchill before moving to Denby in 2012.

In his various roles he has been responsible for both UK and all international markets and across all channels, including retail, hospitality and trade. This experience will be invaluable in the next stages of Royal Crown Derby’s transformation, which began last year when the business was acquired by former Steelite International CEO, Kevin Oakes.

Rowley added: “This is a period of positive change for Royal Crown Derby and I am certain that my experience will allow me to continue to grow the success the brand has enjoyed both in the UK and in new and established global territories.

“Passion for the industry and perfection in its product is in the DNA of this business and its people. This has great synergy with my own attitude and I am looking forward to combining all of our skills to make a real difference to the future of the brand.”

Rowley succeeds Christopher Oakes as sales and marketing director, after Oakes was appointed MD of the company, with Kevin Oakes maintaining his position as chairman.

“Over the past 12 months we have successfully diversified our product with the introduction of our art glaze and studio glaze collections, as well as extended our reach in the luxury hospitality market.
