Space shoots for the stars with Cheltenham school


Space Catering Equipment has completed a major kitchen and training centre project at the new All Saints Academy in Cheltenham.

The firm provided state-of-the-art catering operations for the secondary school, which opened its doors back in September and has already gained accolades for its facilities on both a local and national level.

Space worked alongside main contractor, Skanska, to provide a food tech. training kitchen that would enable catering students to gain their BTEC qualifications in an authentic cooking environment.

It also fitted a kitchen to feed up to 1,500 pupils and staff everyday in the school’s onsite cafeteria.

The café kitchen is located behind a bespoke-fitted servery where staff and pupils can choose from a range of fresh meals and snacks displayed in a combination of chilled and ambient deli counters, heated display cabinets, and refrigerated units.

The main kitchen itself features a cookline that includes two Falcon mobile six-burner open top ranges, a Falcon Bratt pan, single tank twin basket fryer and pasta boiler, as well as a Rational 10-grid combi-steamer.

Space also equipped the kitchen with its own chiller room, freezer room and dry store area, while the dedicated wash-up section features a Mechline pre-rinse spray hose and Commenda pass-through dishwasher.

The food tech. training facility is adjacent to the main working kitchen and can teach up to 16 students at a time.

It features six large self-contained cooking areas which each have a Falcon six-burner range and grill on bench legs, with a fryer in between. Directly opposite each cooking station is a wash-up area with sink unit and built-in cupboards and drawers.

Students also have access to a ChefQuip mixer and the entire kitchen is served by energy efficient Foster refrigerators and a freezer.

In addition to these two working kitchens, Space also installed a separate stand-alone ‘Food to go’ café servery at the other end of the school to facilitate queuing, provide a variety of offers for main meals and snacks during break periods, and also to service the school hall with refreshments when events and theatre productions take place.

Robbie McKay, M&E services manager for the All Saints Academy project at Skanska, said Space fulfilled the catering equipment on time and within budget. “They delivered the project within our given timescales at every step to provide first class catering facilities for this new academy.”
