Space has no regrets taking plunge into manufacturing

Kitchen house marks 10 years since it acquired Holmes Catering Equipment, giving it a platform to provide manufacturing and fabrication services

Space Group has marked 10 years since it “took the plunge” into manufacturing by acquiring Holmes Catering Equipment.

It was this month back in 2014 that the Gloucester-based catering equipment distributor completed the acquisition and this week it said it has had no regrets, calling it a “wonderful journey”.

“Over the past decade, the business has gone from strength to strength, growing every year, doubling its workforce, supporting customers through thick and thin, and proving that British manufacturing can thrive by excelling at the fundamentals and innovating to deliver real value to its clients,” it stated.

Space Group is now part of the Bunzl family after its parent company was Nisbets was taken over earlier this year.

At the time it snapped up Holmes Catering Equipment a decade ago it was independently owned and the takeover allowed it to instantly increase the range of turnkey catering and fit-out business solutions that it could provide.

Holmes is based in York so the deal also gave Space its first foothold in the north of England.

The addition of Holmes and its fabrication capabilities has supported Space’s ascent to become one of the largest kitchen houses in the UK, with revenues of more than £27m last year.

Amongst many highlights, one of Holmes’ proudest achievements was supporting the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic. Its factory team worked tirelessly around the clock to manufacture hundreds of privacy screens for hospitals across the country.
