Shropshire-headquartered firm, Border Janitorial Supplies, has purchased Crystal Catering Equipment’s assets after the Welsh dealer was no longer able to trade in its prior form.

Border Janitorial was founded in Llanidloes 35 years ago and is a family-run business with depots in Newtown and Oswestry.

The dealer is aiming to make Crystal’s transition into the group as seamless as possible, purchasing the Aberystwyth-based firm’s assets including its webshop and social media accounts.

The business will re-branded as Crystal Catering & Hygiene Supplies, while existing MD Brian Forbes will continue to manage the firm.

Adrian Howells, MD of Border Janitorial, told Catering Insight that as around 75% of his company’s trade was in the hygiene sector and the remainder in foodservice, while Crystal’s profile is the other way round, he hopes to combine the business models to expand customers’ choices in both sectors.

He said: “This partnership brings Crystal into the largest and most established catering and hygiene supply company in the region.

“Adding Crystal Catering Equipment to the operation allows west Wales to have a local depot in Aberystwyth which can now expand its range of catering equipment and consumables into a complete commercial hygiene supplies business.”

Border is also be able to offer three Crystal staff members new roles going forwards.

Business restructuring specialist West Advisory managed the process, with Crystal Catering Equipment’s liquidator Nick West detailing: “Covid-19 has caused relentless disruption to the hospitality industry and its supply chain (the supply chain part is often overlooked). Despite Crystal ceasing operations and mothballing the business, the government support was insufficient to serve ongoing commitments. The business in its current ‘insolvent’ form was no longer viable.

“However, we are pleased to report that a sale of various assets has been achieved and the former employees have secured future employment with the purchaser. In the current climate, this is a good outcome and will result in a return to creditors.”

West added: “The director [Forbes] had a very close relationship with his staff, suppliers and customers and is extremely grateful for their support and loyalty during the last 26 years.”

Crystal was incorporated in 1997 as Crystal Cymru until 2014, when it became Crystal Catering Equipment. Forbes has served as the MD since 2001.

It provides a full range of catering equipment for restaurants, bars, hotels, pubs, schools, colleges and the leisure and tourism industry. The company can also supply a bespoke fabrication service.

The dealership supplies brands including Polar, Rational, Dualit, Vogue, Global, Samsung, Dick, Buffalo, ChefWorks and Bay West Hygiene Systems.
