RDA accomplishes latest Costa engagement

RDA designed and installed Costa Coffee’s latest branch in Colchester Hospital.

Restaurant Design Associates (RDA) has completed a project to transform an empty shell at the Colchester Hospital site into a Costa Coffee for WHSmith.

The coffee shop joins a new Marks and Spencer Simply Food store and a WHSmith unit to form a new three-part food, beverage and retail offering.

The ultimate goal was to create a high-street feel for staff, patients and their visitors, giving them choice and convenience within the hospital setting.

RDA’s senior designer Ruth Boote said: “We’ve really proud of the work we’ve been doing with Costa Coffee over the last 13 years and seeing the brand evolve into the largest and fastest-growing coffee shop chain in the UK.”

The fully-branded space features a customer-centred counter and a welcoming seating area as well as anti-microbial fabrics suitable for a healthcare setting across the furniture range.

Senior quantity surveyor Stephen Rochester detailed: “We selected equipment with longevity and flexibility in mind. We worked closely with Victor Manufacturing who provided the chilled displays, as well as installing a Winterhalter dishwasher, a Manitowoc ice machine and a Merrychef oven.”

Details feature throughout include industrial-style light fittings and coffee art-inspired wall decorations.

The grand opening of all three stores took place at the end of 2019.
