PULSEPOINT: Dealer recovery outpaces suppliers

This week’s Catering Insight Pulsepoint flash survey has indicated that the recovery speed of dealers from the coronavirus impact, compared to suppliers, has reversed from its initial position.

In the first weeks of our research, the trend was for suppliers to record a trading level ahead of their distributor counterparts, however, the latest set of results suggest that dealers are now catching or even surpassing manufacturing revenue.

This week’s results had 100% of supplier respondents reporting that their trading levels are down by 51% or more compared to the same period in 2019. This has slipped from 50% of respondents reporting in that category last week.

However, 50% of dealer respondents reported their trade was up by between 1-25%, with the other 50% saying their revenue was reduced by 26-50% – rising from 25% reporting in that category last week, though no-one responded to say that business was reduced by 51% or more, compared to 25% last week.

Enquiries for both dealers and suppliers reported at the same level this week, with half of both sets of respondents reporting between 1-5 enquiries, and the other 50% reporting between 11-50 enquiries. This represents an increase for dealers, with 50% the previous week detailing 6-10 enquiries and none in the higher category at that point. But the supplier figures suggest a drop, as while 50% of respondents last week were also in the 11-50 enquiries category, there was also 33% of respondents then recording 51+ enquiries, compared to none this week.

On the order side of things, again dealers’ figures have improved, with half recording 1-5 orders, compared to 100% last week, and 50% recording 11-50 orders. While supplier respondents painted a more mixed picture, with 50% recording 51+ orders, compared to 33% of respondents in that category last week. However, the other 50% reported 1-5 orders, set against 17% last week.
