NI caterer modernises uni’s ‘canteen’ operations

Northern Ireland’s largest independent contract caterer has vowed to revamp the catering facilities at the University of Ulster after landing a five-year supply deal.

The Mount Charles Group will become the exclusive provider of all in-house catering services at the university and promised to invest in a set-up that will be a “world away” from traditional canteen-style service.

The contract has already created up to 30 new posts, bringing the total number of people employed by the company to approximately 1,300 across five divisions.

The Mount Charles Group has worked closely with the University of Ulster to oversee a complete refresh of the current campus refectories at Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee, transforming the foodservice to a more contemporary offering including the introduction of four dynamic new high-street themed brands:- U:EAT, Pango, Moka independent coffee and crEATe.

Cathal Geoghegan, managing director of the Mount Charles Group, said: “We have been working closely with the university to redesign the facilities and develop a range of modern food offerings, all of which are a world away from traditional canteen style service. We’re confident we will provide students with the variety, convenience and value that they need.”

Mount Charles said the University of Ulster contract was another part of its diversification strategy.

“The third level education sector is a key growth area for us and we are looking forward to further developing our presence in this market over the next few years,” commented Geoghegan.
