The Cabinet Office has launched an online portal that specifically aims to provide suppliers with greater transparency of the government’s future programme of works.
The ‘Government Construction Pipeline’ currently features more than £109 billion worth of government construction contract opportunities and Cabinet Office Minister, Chloe Smith, said it would hopefully help suppliers to plan ahead, invest in and grow their businesses.
Although the site is more useful for main contractors and developers, it may prove to be of interest to kitchen houses with strong links to the public sector or those wishing to keep on top of where the government is spending its money.
“We know that being transparent about opportunities available in the public sector is exactly what suppliers need to start looking at their business, investing and boosting their capabilities,” said Smith.
The Government Construction Pipeline is set to be reviewed every six months to ensure new opportunities are reflected and more details are provided as they emerge.
It has now been updated following the Spending Round for 2015-2016 to include further programmes and projects up to 2020 and beyond.
The National Specialist Contractors Councils (NSCC) said the need for the portal was reflected in its latest ‘State of the Trade survey, which revealed that only 6% of specialist contractors are currently planning work more than a year in advance.
Furthermore, just over half are looking ahead less than three months, with 25% planning their work between three and six months into the future.
The NSCC said: “The online portal enables users to view the data in the Construction Pipeline in a number of ways, including by sector, by region and by value, and it is envisioned that the online portal will eventually include the Infrastructure Pipeline as well. This should enable more specialist contractors to review their planning horizons further in advance.”
