Graham Bean relishing the design life at SHW

Graham Bean

Former Lockhart stalwart Graham Bean is savouring the opportunity to be involved in large-scale kitchen projects again after joining up with SHW Design.

Bean officially retired at the end of 2016 after giving 22 years’ service to Bunzl Lockhart, where he most recently served as national design director.

But he decided early on that full-time retirement wasn’t for him and he’s now taken on a three-day-a-week role as associate design consultant at SHW Design, where he is working alongside managing director Gareth Sefton.

Incidentally, the pair first worked together in the early 90s when Sefton joined Lockhart as a trainee CAD technician. At the time, Bean was just three months into his position as an area design manager.

Sefton (right) said he was delighted to have Bean on board, adding that he brings a wealth of design, commercial and corporate knowledge to the Kent-based organisation.  GS cropped

“I took the opportunity of employing Graham when he retired from Bunzl Lockhart to bring his wealth of experience in both client management and to continue the mentoring role he started 23 years ago!” he said.

“His role will be to assist in the client leading of large projects and assist with the management structure within the office. It’s great to be working with Graham again – it seems like only yesterday!”

Bean told Catering Insight that he was really enjoying the new role.

“It’s back to my roots and where it all started for me really,” he explained. “I took retirement from Bunzl Lockhart at the end of last year but I didn’t want to completely stop doing anything. I had a conversation with Gareth and he felt there was a benefit to me being around the business and using my knowledge and experience. I am enjoying working with the team – it is a young team and I am happy to be able to mentor where it is needed.”

Bean said his immediate focus was on a “fairly large” catering project that SHW Design is delivering for a client in the B&I sector.

“It is a corporate project, which really suits my background in contract catering if you think back to the Sodexo days. I can bring my expertise in that area to the table and work with the customer in terms of design and client liaison.”

SHW Design provides a comprehensive design service to the hospitality industry, including concept design, tender documentation and action, mobilisation and construction.
