Middleby UK has discovered that a third party was fraudulently sending letters or e-mails to its customers requesting to change the bank account details that the dealers had on record.
The manufacturer did change its bank details in April 2015 but is at pains to emphasise that it does not plan to alter them again in the near future.
Sales director Kenny Smith explained: “Our head office asked us to make sure our customers were aware of a fraud that was being perpetrated, where fraudsters were sending e-mails from very similar e-mails to our genuine address, asking for money to be transferred to different bank accounts to the real one.
“This is a very clever fraud as the e-mail address may only have one digit of a difference and this difference can be subtle.
“Our advice would be if a dealer gets any suspicious correspondence they should always check if it is genuine by either phoning the person who has sent the e-mail with a number they know is real, or e-mailing to an address they know is real.”
