All project professionals like nothing more than to see the job through when they take on an important scheme, but Jonathan Meats probably never thought he’d have to wait seven years when he was assigned to a major healthcare foodservice project in London.
However, that’s exactly what happened as the landmark project — involving new catering facilities, ward kitchens and visitor cafes at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Royal London Hospital — grew and grew, with new components and strands added with each year that passed.
Jonathan finally saw the last piece of work handed over at the end of 2014 and with it achieved the acclaim of overseeing the largest contract in Garners’ history.
By the time the job was completed, the order value for catering equipment totaled some £2m.
Working closely with main contractor Skanska, Jonathan had to navigate various challenges during the course of the project — from the logistical, such as getting heavy-duty catering equipment up to 18 different floors and 35 ward kitchens, to the bureaucratic, such as seeing the introduction of now-standard CSCS cards midway through the contract.
Of course, such a colossal project would never have been possible without the support and teamwork of his colleagues, particularly operations manager Sarah Shiggins, who arranged many of the installs required.
The runaway success of projects such as this one reaffirms Nottingham-based Garners’ status as one of the leading catering design and installation houses in the country.
It’s no surprise, then, that Jonathan and his colleagues in the project department continue to be kept busy by major schemes spanning market sectors such as prisons, social care, stadia, leisure and education.
