Lloyd opens equipment refurbishment centre

Lloyd Catering Equipment is now using high velocity dry blasting to revitalise used catering equipment.

Rotherham-based distributor Lloyd Catering Equipment has finished work on its new refurbishment centre.

The facility utilises the latest in industrial cleaning technology including high velocity wet and dry blasting machines, ultrasonic cleaning machines, polishing machines, humidity controlled drying room and a fully equipped service bay.

MD Simon Lloyd explained: “We have invested in this facility so that we can offer our clients a broader range of services and a viable alternative in many cases to purchasing replacement equipment.”

However, he emphasised: “We do not have any plans or aspirations to get into the second-hand equipment market. However, a significant proportion of our business is with restaurant groups and these clients often have the requirement to refurbish existing equipment for reuse within a revamped restaurant scheme.”

The distributor has been carrying out equipment refurbishments for many years, but the firm reports that demand has grown significantly of late.

Lloyd further detailed: “Historically the deep cleaning element of the refurbishment process most often involved large, heated tanks and highly caustic cleaning chemicals. It is an inefficient, messy and rather unpleasant process involving a lot of manual scrubbing and scraping.

“We decided to investigate what other methods were available and used badly carbonised chargrill bars as our main benchmark. We found that the bars did indeed present a real challenge for many of the methods and machines we looked at, but we eventually found a range of machines that gave very good and consistent results.

“We set aside a large area in our main warehouse and designed and fitted out our refurbishment centre. The facility had a new resin floor, walls and ceiling clad in whiterock. It includes a power-wash room with a drained floor, a custom-built drying room, a polishing room as well as the high velocity dry blasting and wet blasting machines. We also use ultrasonic cleaning tanks with non-caustic environmentally friendly cleaning agents.”

He concluded: “For us this has been a fairly significant project and financial investment, but we are delighted with the results. We are now able to refurbish equipment to a much higher standard retaining component parts that would otherwise have to be replaced and we can do this in less time whilst retaining good environmental credentials.”
