Krupps provided its first Klean Lab warewasher to Camposampiero Hospital in Altapdovana, Italy.

Italian warewasher manufacturer Krupps has created a new machine to sanitise hospital footwear, helping in the fight against Covid-19.

Klean Lab aims to effectively remove dirt and bacteria, using a cycle that is designed to maximise the potential of the detergent and quick-acting sanitising acid.

The new unit is operated by a touchscreen display with icons. The washing cycle consists of various phases designed to take advantage of the combination of washing, high temperatures, detergent and sanitiser. This equipment also features a self-diagnosis system and by connecting to iKloud, Krupps’ remote control tool via wi-fi, it is possible to download all the data relating to its operation.

Klean Lab can wash up to 70 pairs of footwear per hour and its use is aimed at hospitals, medical and veterinary offices, nursing homes but also within the food supply chain such as pastry shops, bakeries, large-scale retail trade and butchers who use professional footwear.

Enrico and Fabio Scanavin, of Krupps, revealed how the idea of Klean Lab was born: “In this emergency situation everyone’s attention has shifted to personal protective equipment but we realised that nobody was worrying about footwear, which also carries dirt and bacteria accumulated during working hours between the various rooms.

“After a quick discussion with our internal research and development laboratory, we managed to carry out physical tests on samples of different professional footwear and give life to the final project.”

The first installation took place on Wednesday, 15 April at Camposampiero Hospital in Altapdovana through the support of the Veneto Region and Azienda Zero.

The delivery of the equipment took place safely thanks to the contribution of Italy’s Civil Protection national body and was attended by the Mayor of the Municipality of Camposampiero, Katia Maccarone, and the Mayor of the Municipality of San Giorgio delle Pertiche, Daniele Canella.

Export MD Riccardo Scuotto stated: “We delivered the first Klean Lab, a tool for washing and sanitising professional footwear and ensures great support for the fight against Covid-19, to Camposampiero Hospital in Padua. Our production line is now open for this new product and we are able to deliver to the UK in one week.”
