Middleby UK has promoted sales director Kenny Smith to the role of MD, as reported by Catering Insight’s sister magazine Foodservice Equipment Journal.
The company, which represents a portfolio of brands such as Pitco, Houno and TurboChef in the UK, has operated without an official MD since Adrian Wood retired from the business at the start of last year.
Smith has served as the company’s most senior figure since then, but the change in title formally recognises the role he has played in steadying the ship and leading the business forward.
Asked what the new position would mean for the business on a day-to-day basis, he told FEJ: “It probably doesn’t change things on a day-to-day basis that much because we have not had a managing director for a year-and-a-half since Adrian left. But obviously it gives us a bit more of a drive to move forward because we have had some vacant positions, so that is where it is going to help.”
Smith joined the Middleby Group back in 2010, initially as a salesman with food waste and bottle cooler equipment subsidiary IMC. He was then promoted to sales director before taking over the same post at Middleby.
He oversaw the expansion of the firm’s Wigan-based showroom, now totalling 50,000ft2, which is six times larger than its previous incarnation.
“I am excited about the new role,” Smith said. “We have grown the business by quite a number of percent over the last couple of years and, like any corporation, we will be targeting ever greater growth.”
