Equipment installation specialist Commercial Maintenance Services UK (CMS) is to start installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

The company already has more than 20 years’ experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of commercial gas and heating, plumbing and electrical systems, including catering equipment.

CMS’ latest move is aimed at underpinning the electric vehicles revolution in its Northumberland region, where Britishvolt was granted planning permission for its first full-scale lithium-ion gigaplant on the site of the former Blyth Power Station.

With businesses planning to invest an estimated £15.8bn in fleet electrification over the next 12 months, the Gateshead-based company says it is already experiencing a high nationwide demand for commercial charging points.

CMS commercial director, Bennet Hoskyns-Abrahall, said: “The creation of these gigafactories puts the UK and the North-East at the forefront of electric vehicle technology and production, which will lower costs and in turn encourage more people to make the switch.

“Momentum is building towards electric vehicle ownership, but this country needs to rapidly expand the charging infrastructure to keep pace. That means charging stations will soon become a common sight outside a huge range of businesses and organisations.

“CMS has grown its electrical team by 40% in the past 6 weeks and we continue to recruit engineers across the business in support of its growth strategy. I expect we will need to make further additions to the team over the coming months as we see greater demand for commercial charging stations.”

He continued: “The electrification of vehicles in the UK is gaining significant momentum and businesses recognise that this not only lowers transport costs but is reducing pollution levels, together with their carbon footprint.

“Staff and customers are coming to expect that businesses offer EV charging stations, which also highlights a clear commitment to the environment. In addition, introducing electric cars into a business offers a number of tax advantages.

“We have a huge range of clients, many operating multi-site locations across the UK, including hospitality, the care sector, leisure and educational facilities, who all require or are planning to install EV charging stations.

“We can save clients time and money by installing a charging station while our engineers are undertaking other planned maintenance.”
