Milan-based trade show Host has revealed the winners of its 2021 Smart Label innovation awards.

The award has reached its fifth edition and is organised in collaboration with the POLI.Design Consortium of the Milan Polytechnic School under the patronage of ADI – the Italian Industrial Design Association.

The honour recognises the newest and most revolutionary foodservice equipment solutions, taking account of energy saving and the use of green materials, as well as focusing on hygiene, flexibility and technology.

Almost 80 nominations were submitted, with more than half of the aspiring winners originating from Host’s key foodservice equipment sector. Twenty or so hailed from the bar, coffee machines, vending, coffee, and tea segment and more than 10% from the tableware segment.

A five-member jury of university professors, professionals and national and international experts in design, hospitality and energy-saving, including well-known Italian pastry chef Iginio Massari and Matteo Ingaramo, president of Poli.Design, voted on the degree of innovation of the proposed solutions.

The competing companies battled in three separate categories: Innovation Smart Label, dedicated to products with a high content of innovation; Green Smart Label, for products that stand out for innovation based on the sector trends for energy savings; and Smart Label, the award dedicated to products that can bring forth significant development in the various Ho.re.ca. sectors of reference.

After having been awarded to more than 70 companies and products in previous editions, the Smart Label recognised just 25 winners this year in a closely-fought contest.

Four products won the Innovation Smart Label accolade: Heylo, from Carimali, an espresso machine that uses an induction system for heating water; aēralab by Iberital, a smart system that allows baristas to recognises different types of milk, therefore enabling the optimum foam for their preparations; T&S WaterWatch, a solution dedicated to foodservice that allows operators to have real-time control over consumption, by T&S Brass and Bronze Works; and the Multi.Day Hot Vacuum from Unox, a patented tool that allows vacuum-packing of food at the right temperature and to transport it anywhere without the risk of spilling liquids or to expose food to outside contamination.

There were six winners in the Green Smart Label category: the Smart and Green Ice Maker from Castel Mac, a programmable machine that can also be operated via app and wi-fi, which can reduce energy consumption by about 25%, and drinking water consumption by over 60%; the Twin Star Double Face washing machine for professional kitchens by Ali Group brand Dihr, which can reduce footprint by 65% thanks to a ‘stock-and-wash’ principle; the Visualis Eurocryor with adaptive system from Epta, a refrigerated service cabinet with an ergonomic design that also enables visibility and conservation of the products on display; the DB-10 potato peeler from Metalúrgica Skymsen, constructed from stainless steel and featuring a peel collection filter, which can process a batch of potatoes in less than 2 minutes in a safe and eco-friendly way; the S series S50E Icon counter oven from Moretti Forni that can fit all the multi-functions of similar models in one square metre; and the Remind recycled grey, a chair by Pedrali created entirely from recycled polypropylene.

While 15 further products won the Smart Label award: Hydrogate Interaction from Blupura; Zero by Dalla Corte; Mychef iCook 6gn 1/1 from Distform/Mychef; Prometheus Interaction by Conti Valerio; EV3 200 Web Interaction from Evco; Gaggia Milano La Solare by Evoca; AllGround from Fiorenzato Mc; e-Q electronic pot-filler by Gebr.
