23 hardy souls from the catering equipment sector braved 60mph winds and driving rain to reach the Peak District’s highest point on Friday, raising hundreds of pounds for Hospitality Action in the process.
Members of the Commercial Catering Equipment Charity Walking Group – founded by Celltherm Coldrooms’ James Connolly and Archer Catering Systems’ Nick Archer – assembled in Edale village for bacon sandwiches before setting off on an eight-mile round trip that involved scaling Kinder Scout.
At 636 metres above sea level, the city of Manchester and even the mountains of Snowdonia in North Wales can be seen from the peak on a clear day.
Catering Insight was among those to make the trek, along with representatives from industry companies such as Falcon, Jestic, Pentland, Amerex, CES, Angelo Po, Vision Commercial Kitchens, EAIS, Essential Supplies and the FEA.
The walk is the third that the group has organised since its launch in 2018 – and arguably the most testing yet.
After a fairly steady and dry ascent, walkers were met by powerful gale force winds and enough rain to put even the best waterproof gear to the test.
The inclement weather failed to dampen spirits however, and the group powered on to complete the challenge fuelled by a short break at the top where the FEA’s Keith Warren and Falcon’s Lawrence Hughes produced a generous supply of confectionery and chocolate brownies to give the group’s blood sugar levels a much-needed boost.
So far, the walk has raised nearly £700 for Hospitality Action, which supports members of the hospitality industry who have fallen on difficult times. The page is still open and donations can be made HERE.
The Kinder Scout walk is historically important as it is inspired by the ‘Mass Trespass’ back in 1932. This walk was the initial act of defiance against aristocratic landowners which helped to open up swathes of wild land to walkers, ramblers and the general public without fear of prosecution.
The Commercial Catering Equipment Charity Walking Group is planning another walk later in the year and is open to all ages and abilities, with the group keen to promote the benefits of being outdoors in the fresh air. “These walks are about improving the health and wellbeing of our industry,” said Connolly.
