The couple who sold Continental Chef Supplies to Bunzl Group five years ago have spoken of their delight at how quickly a new venture supplying high-end catering products to luxury hotels and restaurants has taken off.
Paul and Valda Goodfellow launched ‘Goodfellow and Goodfellow’ last year after deciding they wanted to “go back to their roots” of providing a highly personalised service and supplying the best brands in tableware, kitchen items and chefs’ clothing.
The husband and wife team, who built CCS into a multimillion pound business before it was acquired by Bunzl five years ago, have succeeded in bagging a number of prestigious clients, including The Ritz, The Dorchester and a string of Michelin-starred chefs.
Operating from a showroom in London’s Baker Street, Goodfellows is understood to have won the exclusive rights to several leading brands of kitchen and tableware, as well as the De Berkel clothing line.
It is also supplying customers with light equipment, including pans, chopping boards, mixers, utensils and sous vide equipment.
Managing director, Valda Goodfellow, told The Journal that tight margins and fierce competition meant chefs, hoteliers and restaurateurs needed a differentiator to stand out from the crowd.
“We spotted an opportunity at the higher end of the market, where the emphasis is on quality, innovation and customer service and these are all areas where we have a proven track record,” she said.
“Our aim was to build a business around values of innovation and good service. Customers want to talk to people who know their business so our field and telesales team are all trained in what we know customers expect in great service, and many of them know the hospitality trade inside-out.”
She told the paper that its objective was to add to the existing market where there is demand for innovation and exclusivity, but also have the all-round capabilities to supply larger operators.
“We have been stunned that major groups are coming to us, rather than us having to go and find business. They obviously like what we do because we have a mentality and culture that matches theirs,” she added.
“We have had some fantastic support from friends and colleagues in the industry, and we could not be more pleased with the welcome that our new venture has had.”
