Electrolux Professional’s Richard McKay has already climbed Gran Paradiso mountain in Italy in August.

Electrolux Professional is sponsoring its regional business manager, Richard McKay, as he aims to complete the Seven Summit Challenge in support of mental health charity, Mind.

McKay is set to climb some of the highest mountains across each of the seven continents over the next 3 years as part of the challenge, after he began his journey with a practice summit of Italy’s highest mountain, Gran Paradiso, in August.

2022 will see Richard take on Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Mount Elbrus (Russia) and Aconcagua (Argentina), with Denali (Alaska), Mount Vinson (Antarctica), Carstensz Pyramid (Indonesia) and finally, Everest (Nepal) set to follow in 2023 and 2024.

His aim is to raise awareness of mental health issues after tragically losing his best friend to suicide in 2008. McKay said: “When Peter passed away, I put on a brave face but it really was a difficult time for me. Mind provided me with the guidance I needed to get me through it and come to terms with what had happened.

“With lockdown and isolation, the past year has been particularly hard on everyone’s mental health, so the support offered by charities such as Mind is more important than ever. Hopefully, this challenge will inspire someone who is struggling to make that call or have a much-needed conversation they may not have otherwise had.”

With the Electrolux Professional logo emblazoned on his climbing gear, he will update his followers with regular blogs and videos documenting his ascent to each summit.

McKay continued: “I was looking for a challenge that tested both my physical and mental limits, so climbing the eight summits seemed to be the perfect fit. There’s no guarantee I will succeed, but as long as I give it my best shot, I’ll be happy with whatever I achieve.”

Having completed his first practice climb, he commented: “Summiting Gran Paradiso was an incredibly humbling experience – I’m actually scared of heights, so nothing could really prepare me for the reality of being on the mountain. However, this hasn’t deterred me in the slightest, and I’m looking to incorporate these learnings into my training over the next few months. I’ll be practicing my conditioning in the Scottish Highlands, before undertaking my first three summits in 2022.”
