Ed’s view: Praise and celebration

This year’s been a long decade, hasn’t it? Sometimes it does feel like 10 years have passed since 2021 began though, with all the twists and turns of the pandemic and its impact. But the very fact it has been such a challenging time means it’s all the more poignant to celebrate the achievements of our industry, the UK catering equipment supply chain.

And we hope you will agree that the Catering Insight Awards does just that. Our recognition initiative encompasses every distributor and every supplier in the sector – so many of whom deserve so much praise for how they’ve conducted business over these last 12 months. Indeed, when we opened nominations for the event, the Catering Insight team were heartened to read the floods of entries detailing exactly how fleet of foot and adaptable these scores of companies have been.

This of course made it all the more difficult to whittle these deserving competitors down to a shortlist, so everyone who made it as a finalist can justifiably feel proud of their efforts. You can see a full run-down of each and every category’s shortlist in the November issue, starting on page 14. It really does read like a who’s who of the industry.

In the meantime we turned the decision as to who should win the trophies over to you, with senior distributor executives deciding the victors of the supplier categories and vice versa. I hope those of you voting took your responsibilities very seriously!

The winners will be announced at the gala ceremony on Thursday 18 November at the grand venue of
8 Northumberland Avenue in central London. Ticketing is now closed, so if you’ve missed it, you’ll be missing out next Thursday!

I’d also like to emphasise that we take all Catering Insight Awards guests’ safety very seriously, especially considering the recent uptick in Covid cases. Learning to live with the virus doesn’t mean ignoring its existence, it means mitigating the risks and doing everything to limit the spread, while continuing our daily lives. So with this in mind, we have secured a larger space than would normally be required for the ceremony, to make sure there is plenty of extra room for social distancing. We have also opted for the largest possible tables (usually used for bigger groups) so there is as much space during the presentation as possible.

Guests will be recommended to wear masks before, between and after the three courses of the evening’s deluxe meal. You will definitely be seeing me masked up while I’m not presenting, it’s a really simple and sensible measure, and I urge you all to do the same. Finally, we will be asking all attendees to provide either proof of double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test within 48 hours of the event.

All of these steps should ensure we have an enjoyable, yet safe night. I can’t wait to see you there!
