Crystaltech Services is celebrating 40 years of trading this month – an impressive feat considering some of the challenges the warewashing industry has faced over those years, including the current Covid crisis.
Founder and MD Derek Maher first began fixing warewashing machines in local pubs and restaurants as a temporary position following a career as a metallurgist and environmental engineer.
In 1980 Maher and his wife Maxine founded Crystaltech, running the business from their garage as the firm’s only employees. Four decades on and the company feels it is the largest independent provider specialising in the installation and maintenance of all makes and models of warewashing machine across the UK.
Maher commented: “Hard work plays a key role in the longevity and success of this business but also managing our team effectively and understanding what our customer’s want and need.”
He is known for being a pioneer in attaining superior glass and dish washer machine results in the catering and pub industry and has led the way for many of the leading pub companies he works with to achieve clean glass results throughout their estates.
Maher believes that through investing in innovative technology and high levels of training, he has enabled his team of 60+ engineers to be able to solve the most obscure warewashing problems. Continual investment in equipment and stocks too he cites as ensuring that the company achieves a high first-time fix rate with a reduced need for second visits.
With investment in equipment and personnel and an increase in new clients, the business has developed over the last year with a growth of 45% in turnover, and takes approximately 4,000 service visits per month with a constantly expanding team of just over 60 engineers who are all fully qualified and hold all relevant accreditations.
