Commercial caterers turn to online procurement


Commercial catering operators are turning to online shopping in just the same way as the general public, a new survey has revealed.

A survey of 450 hospitality operators from across the food, beverage and hospitality sectors found that even when dealing with trade procurement, convenience is the most important reason for them to use online purchasing.

Alex Walters, European sales director of iTradeNetwork, which conducted the research, said: “Online ordering means operators can place their orders at a time convenient to them which is a key point in an industry where working unsociable hours is commonplace. When they do speak to suppliers they can spend their time more efficiently, such as discussing new products and promotions.”

Convenience was given as the most important reason for sourcing products online by almost half of respondents, whilst around a fifth said increased levels of information and control was the most important.

These benefits help to explain why there is a growing appetite amongst hospitality operators who haven’t tried online ordering to give it a go – 58% said they would consider it if it was offered to them.
