Catering Insight’s own central London office is now protected by Mechline Developments’ HyGenikx air and surface sanitisation system.

The simple installation required just one HGX-AF-75 unit, which is suitable for large occupied areas up to 75metre2.

Catering Insight editor Clare Nicholls welcomed the Covid-killing technology, saying: “I was very concerned about returning to the office in these pandemic times, as Covid-19 is contracted through airborne transmission – and our facility is open plan, with no openable windows.

“But with the HyGenikx unit I now feel confident to head back to working in the vicinity of my colleagues, because I know that the technology has been proven effective at removing airborne viruses.”

This was underlined recently via independent trials conducted by Campden BRI, which proved that HyGenikx removed up to 99.99% of an airborne Covid-19 surrogate in under 3 hours.

The compact unit is adaptable, available in both wall-mounted and freestanding options, and can suit various applications including restaurants, bars, hotels, care homes and offices – with specialised units available for food preparation areas, cold rooms, washrooms and refuse areas.

HyGenikx utilises a combination of effective and refined air and surface sterilisation technologies to target and kill biological hazards in the kitchen, including Salmonella, Escherichia coli (E.coli), Norovirus, and other primary sources of infections. It has reportedly been proven to deplete harmful Listeria monocytogens and Listeria innocua from surfaces to undetectable levels and should improve hygiene standards to levels not possible to maintain with traditional cleaning methods alone.

The technology can work safely all day and every day to eliminate bacteria, viruses, moulds, fungi and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) found in the air and on exposed surfaces in a given space.

The range for ‘food storage areas’ is said to have been proven to extend the shelf-life of stored perishable fresh food by an average of 58%, with some produce proving to last as much as 150% longer. Principally, fruit and vegetable life and quality can be significantly extended – which in turn can significantly reduce food waste and cost.

Nicholls concluded: “With the Omicron variant of coronavirus spreading quickly, and the cold weather meaning many are now unable to keep windows and doors open for fresh air, Mechline’s HyGenix technology is an ideal solution to prevent Covid-19 transmission. I would highly recommend not only the foodservice industry, but also all offices, to install this proven effective system to keep staff safe as they return from working from home.”
