The Catering Insight Distributor of the Year – Corporate Social Responsibility accolade, sponsored by DC Warewashing & Icemaking Systems, will recognise those UK dealers who are outstanding corporate citizens. This could be through their work to be efficient and environmentally aware, or demonstrating excellent health and safety standards, or for those who have thrown their backing behind important charitable initiatives.
This year’s finalists are:
Abraxas Catering Equipment
Abraxas has a strong charitable thread running through it. The Kidderminster-based family company raised nearly £900 with its 12 month green initiative for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Not only did these funds help this worthy cause, the programme also helped the environment, as it donated all money obtained through its scrap metal and redundant equipment recycling scheme. Fundraising for this charity for the second year running, in 2019, members of the Abraxas team took on the challenge of 5k obstacle course run, Tough Mudder.
This year the GastroNorth team undertook the 26-mile Northumberland Coast Mighty Hike for the second year running in support of cancer charity Macmillan. Director Tim Whitfield undertook the challenge last year in memory of his mother, prompting more of the team to join the charity event this year. Collectively the team members raised around £2,000. Plus the distributor supported the launch of The Life Kitchen in Sunderland, the UK’s first cookery school for people living with cancer. The aim of the school is to offer free cookery classes to those living with the disease.
Restaurant Design Associates
RDA has worked considerably to become more sustainable in practices and processes, to give back to the wider community and to look after and develop its team. For instance it has replaced conventional lighting in its office with LEDs. This year it has also worked with Aramark on a project with a real focus on reducing waste, helping to develop recycling stations and food waste stations across one of the caterer’s biggest estates. RDA is committed to giving something back, and this year raised over £1,200 for Anthony Nolan by organising a golf day, BBQ buffet and charity raffle.
Sprint Group has long been championing environmental responsibility. For years it has been helping reduce waste with its reconditioning and repair service, as well as reclaiming condemned items and putting them back into service as safe and functional loan equipment. It has also been keeping rubbish out of landfill by taking packaging away from customers’ sites at its own expense and ensuring they go to a local partner where over 96% of all of its packaging waste is being recycled. This year its focus was on getting better recycling results for refrigeration and WEEE items.
Vision Commercial Kitchens
Vision has always taken its social responsibility seriously to both its employees and their families. All employees are offered complimentary private healthcare as one of their employment benefits. In terms of sustainability and environmental awareness, the company has invested heavily in Office 365 in order to reduce paper consumption. The sales and design teams are also educated and encouraged to promote environmentally friendly, cost-efficient products to its customer base. ‘Team Vision’ has also fundraised over £3,000 for its chosen charity of the year: The Christie cancer charity.
