Catering Insight Awards 2018: emerging distributor of the year shortlist

New entrants to the catering equipment market are popping up all the time, but the Catering Insight Emerging Distributor of the Year accolade, sponsored by Jestic Foodservice Equipment, will honour a dealer that was established less than 5 years ago, and which is making a name for itself by growing its business through winning new projects and delivering high levels of service.

Therefore the contenders are:

Apeiron Catering Engineers
Apeiron has focused on its technical prowess this year, rolling out a new field service management system which has both increased its first time fix rate and reduced its engineers’ response time. Furthermore, founder Will Oryino has now been joined by the experienced Steve McEwan as a director to lead the company forwards. Another recent step for the servicing specialist has been to join CEDA as a service member, where it is looking to leverage the community, technical knowledge and communications of the distributor association.

Greens Commercial Kitchens
Even though it is just 3 years old, Greens is already working with some of the biggest names in the foodservice business and beyond. The Huddersfield-based distributor started the year by nabbing a project to design and fitout a bespoke kitchen for Roganic in London, Michelin-starred television chef Simon Rogan’s latest venture. Subsequently BBC Two came calling for six-part reality series, ‘Million Pound Menu’, asking Greens to transform an empty and near-derelict trading unit in Manchester’s Spinningfields into a refurbished kitchen and restaurant facility in which to film the show.

Indigo Catering Equipment
In its fifth year in business, Indigo has re-structured its team’s job roles to cope with its expansion. Owners Christian Barnes and Andy Booth have even taken on an apprentice to invest in the future of the business, as well as partnering with a service company. The London distributor has also recently revamped its website to demonstrate its capabilities, plus invested in new 3D CAD software as well as trying to go completely paperless where possible. Major achievements include turning around a turnkey school project in 3 weeks over the summer holidays.

Sharpes Commercial Kitchens
Sharpes has made a splash in Scunthorpe after only a year in business. The brainchild of husband and wife team, Darren and Jayne Sharpe, the company has a customer service and quality focus. Darren’s extensive background as an experienced catering equipment engineer informs everything the company does, complementing Jayne’s marketing expertise. The dealer utilises its recently-opened demonstration kitchen to hold events for equipment partners such as Retigo, and has already completed projects in the education, care, restaurants, hotels, cafes and conference centres sectors.

United Hygiene & Catering Equipment
Despite being under 3 years old, Durham-based distributor United Hygiene & Catering Equipment is going from strength to strength. Every year the previous year’s turnover has doubled, with current sales now exceeding £1.2m – quite impressive from a standing start. The distributor assists its end users by putting together specially chosen equipment bundles on its user-friendly, categorised website and offering free delivery on orders above £50. Industry executives believe the company will continue to grow and become a major player in the market.
