Catering Insight and Foodservice Equipment Journal have joined forces to create a special awards programme that will honour the extraordinary efforts of individuals and businesses during the most challenging year in the industry’s history.
As most readers will know, Catering Insight and FEJ usually run separate annual awards ceremonies and gala dinners but sadly the ongoing climate in terms of social distancing means it is simply not practical to be able to put on physical events this year.
Both awards events will return in their normal format in 2021, but for one year only we are delighted to announce a joint digital initiative celebrating the best of the UK catering industry.
The unified awards programme, branded Kitchen & Equipment Awards Week, will be a week-long celebration that sees the winners of different categories announced each day, starting on 30 November.
Andrew Seymour, editorial director of Foodservice Equipment Journal, said: “We would have loved to have brought the industry together for a celebration in 2020 after what everybody has had to contend with this year, but as the weeks have gone by it has become clear that it is just not viable.
“The CI Awards and FEJ Awards have become must-attend dates in the industry calendar and are vital events for us as a business, so it has not been an easy decision to make. But once we did, we set about working on an alternative proposition that captures the spirit of both awards, recognises excellence and provides unmatched value for our sponsors.”
Kitchen & Equipment Awards Week will honour suppliers, distributors and operators through dedicated awards categories that participants of previous CI and FEJ Awards will be familiar with, but which also acknowledge that the industry landscape has changed dramatically.
The industry will be invited to nominate companies and individuals they think deserve recognition – and, crucially, will get to decide the winners through an online voting process once the shortlist has been announced.
Clare Nicholls, editor of Catering Insight, said: “If you look back at the shortlists from previous years, you’ll see stories of rampant sales, high growth and ambitious business initiatives. There is no doubt that everybody’s priorities and agenda have changed this year, but that’s what we aim to recognise.
“The quest to survive the economic implications of the pandemic and emerge from 2020 in as healthy shape as possible has led to companies innovating in ways they could never have imagined, creatively adapting their business models and demonstrating peerless levels of customer service. This is exactly what we intend to celebrate and honour during Kitchen & Equipment Awards Week.”
During the week, winners will be revealed through video presentations that will be premiered online on both publications’ YouTube channels and promoted across both digital platforms, with a dedicated broadcast made to thousands of industry professionals for each category’s winner announcement.
The categories represent a blend of both the CI and FEJ Awards’ usual line-up, with a fresh twist, and as usual, catering equipment professionals and operators will decide on both the nominations and the winners.

The shortlist will be announced simultaneously in both publications’ November issues, as well as online, after which we will open the voting to senior executives of operators, distributors and suppliers, ensuring each cannot vote on their own category.
