Catering brands missing from ‘green directory’

The Carbon Trust has launched a supplier directory for green businesses — but it is noticeably devoid of any representation from the catering equipment and refrigeration sector.

The ‘Accredited Supplier’ scheme aims to help firms find trusted suppliers as they upgrade to more energy efficient equipment.

It is designed to make it easier for green businesses to identify trusted low carbon suppliers, after a survey revealed many buyers were wary that green product marketing claims may be guilty of “greenwashing”.

There are currently 44 suppliers in the directory, including biomass, lighting and technology companies.

However, while ‘catering equipment’ and ‘refrigeration’ are recognised categories within the directory, not a single mainstream manufacturer or supplier from the industry is currently listed.

The only company with clear links to the commercial kitchen market is Berkshire-based Food Industry Technical. It sells a patented system which continuously monitors cooking activity in a kitchen, and then adjusts the ventilation to suit the demand.

The system is already being used in the kitchens at Center Parcs and promises energy savings of up to 50%.

The Carbon Trust says it launched the directory to provide independent validation and recognition of a supplier’s skills and services — a much needed and trusted quality standard in a crowded and fast-growing market place.

“Accredited Suppliers must meet or exceed criteria set by the Carbon Trust designed to examine their capability to deliver thoughtful, well-designed energy efficient and renewable energy systems,” it said. “Only Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers are included in the Green Business Directory.”

The Carbon Trust aims to turn around all applications within three weeks. If an application is successful, companies have to pay an annual accreditation fee of £1,499 plus VAT.

That allows them to refer to themselves as a ‘Carbon Trust Accredited Supplier’ and use the Carbon Trust Accredited Supplier logo.

Companies wishing to be considered for accreditation can download the application form at the foot of the page here.
