Matthew Mayvers, MD of Ulverston-based dealer Cater-Kwik, is progressing with a separate venture to redevelop a local brewery site.

The derelict former Hartley’s brewery has stood empty since it closed in 1991, but Mayvers has bought the site and plans to develop a gastropub or restaurant as well as a shop unit, plus refurbishing cottages and apartments on the site.

He told local news outlet, The Mail: “We’re currently in phase one of the plans. We’re making use of the buildings which are already there.

“It’s always been on the agenda to keep the brewery as a pub if possible. Our ambition is to bring housing, employment and visitors into the town.

“We’re really excited about the plans. Lots of people are showing interest in the shop.

“It’s a good opportunity for someone to make a successful business for themselves in Ulverston.”

He added: “The last year has been a very difficult time with Covid and we’ve been very careful about the level of commitment – if we start something, we want to finish.

“Phase one is well on the way for the end of this year – we’re in a better position than we anticipated after this year.”
