Cafe fined over fryer accident

Denise Fox, the owner of Foxy’s Finest Cafe in Manchester, has been fined more than £5,000 after oil from a deep fat fryer burned a staff member last November.

Worker Rebecca Wallace knocked over the fryer, which had been wrongly moved, and slipped in the oil, suffering severe burns to her lower body.

Salford council health and safety officers found Fox should not have allowed fryers containing hot oil to be moved – and that Wallace should have been sent home by manager Alice O’Donnell, the owner’s daughter, for wearing incorrect attire.

Fox said a disciplinary hearing warning Wallace about her work attire had ‘fallen on deaf ears’ but cleaning procedures had since been corrected.
