British equipment firm sells up after 164 years

British bakery equipment manufacturer Spooner Vicars Bakery Systems has sold its business to The Middleby Corporation.

The164-year-old Merseyside firm has accepted a takeover offer from Middleby, which wants to use its technology to strengthen its relationships with the industrial baking market.

Spooner Vicars manufactures baking equipment that is specifically used in the making of cookies and crackers. It generates sales of almost £6.5m a year.

“As part of Middleby, we have the opportunity to showcase the Spooner Vicars products to a broader market by leveraging the strength of the Middleby international sales organization and our existing relationships with global industrial bakeries,” stated Selim Bassoul, chairman and CEO of The Middleby Corporation.

He added that the firm was continuing to see a growing global demand from its customers to automate their operations, and said Spooner Vicars’ products would help address this trend.

The British manufacturer’s product line encompasses equipment and systems capable of mixing, forming, baking, cooling, sandwiching and packaging to produce every type of biscuit and snack baked product.
