Bunzl, the parent company of Lockhart Catering Equipment, Aggora and Continental Chef Supplies, has added another industry business to its portfolio.
The group completed the acquisition of Hampshire-based dealer Comax at the end of May.
Comax is a distributor to the leisure, janitorial, care home and foodservice sectors in the UK, supplying catering and kitchen supplies and cleaning and hygiene products. The dealer generated revenue of £14m in 2020.
The Ringwood-based company was established in 1992 and had grown to become one of the largest independently-operated wholesalers on the south coast of England.
It supplies more than 25,000 product lines from brands including Rational, Lincat, Roller Grill, Robot Coupe, Buffalo, KitchenAid, Churchill, DeBuyer, Genware, Steelite and Utopia.
Comax director Graham Moakes said of the acquisition: “Day-to-day it’s business as usual, only now we have new resources and capabilities to continue driving quality and value for our customers.
“Comax is a well-established successful business, and will work independently from Bunzl; we will continue to operate from our offices/warehouse in Ringwood, Hampshire. The management team and all staff will remain in place and continue to look after their valued customers. Being part of the Bunzl family of businesses will offer long-term investment opportunities for future development.”
Separately, Bunzl also completed the acquisition of Harvey Distributors, a cleaning and hygiene distributor in Australia with customers in the healthcare, education, foodservice and facilities management sectors. Harvey Distributors generated revenue in 2020 of AUD7m (c.£4m).
Frank van Zanten, CEO of Bunzl, said: “Growth through acquisitions is an important part of the ongoing strategy for Bunzl and I am pleased to welcome both Comax and Harvey Distributors to the Bunzl family.
“Both businesses strengthen the group’s cleaning and hygiene operations, an area we expect will be supported by enhanced hygiene trends. Inclusive of these acquisitions the group has now acquired six businesses since the start of the year with a total committed spend of £114m. The pipeline for acquisitions remains active, with discussions ongoing.”
