Blizzard sweeps in with higher-spec kit

Pentland Wholesale has just extended its popular Blizzard range with the launch of a new generation of equipment. Catering Insight asked operations manager, Dean Simpson, what dealers need to know.

Tell us about the range of Blizzard equipment launching this month.

We are launching a complete new generation of upright gastronorm freezers and fridges. It is totally innovative from the older generation cabinets and we really think they are going to be big sellers for us. They are a more economic cabinet to run and a much higher specification. It is still the Blizzard brand and the Blizzard product that distributors know and have already been buying, but we have increased the specifications throughout the whole cabinet.

What has motivated the launch?

Normally it is market-led by what people are wanting, however in this instance it has happened the other way around because we’ve recognised that we have to react to the Ecodesign Directive and people are more energy conscious now. We talked to our manufacturers about this a couple of years ago and this is the result of that.

Talk us through some of the stand-out features.

New features include high ambient operation (43°C), removable cassette system for easy maintenance, a unique front-breathing refrigeration system with easy access to electrical parts and 70mm thick insulation.

Any further additions planned?

In stock soon there will be a new range of countertop displays for heated or chilled products and a floor-standing stainless steel ‘grab & go’ unit. It stands at just over 1.5m with ventilated cooling and LED lighting, which is ideal for displaying sandwiches and drinks. It will be available in 600mm and 1000mm widths.

You also brought in a range of snack equipment earlier this year. How has that been received?

We are getting very good feedback on that and have had good success with sales. It is light duty catering equipment and, unusually, we are supplying it with on-site warranty, which reflects our confidence in the quality of it. We’ve also started supplying Inoxtrend combi ovens and with the free school meals programme happening these have gone into several county councils. They have been really well-received because they are simple to use and not over-complicated.

Pentland is well-known for its refrigeration offering. Are you looking to expand on the hot side of things moving forward?

Yes, we want to become seen as a business that you can get all your products from, rather than having to just purchase the cold from us and then move on and purchase heated units elsewhere. The year-on-year growth in takeaway and sandwich shops is forecast to continue indefinitely as far as we see it at the moment, so there is a real need for this equipment and that is why we have decided to branch out into it.
