Bidvest marks decade of water charity support

Bidvest Foodservice and its customers have helped to raise over £140,000 for water projects in the past decade.

Bidvest Foodservice and One Drinks, the UK ethical drinks brand that donates its profit to fund clean water projects, are marking 10 years of working together this year.

The companies are joining forces to celebrate the milestone anniversary and raise awareness of the global water crisis through One’s ‘Give Water Give Life’ campaign.

As part of the campaign, teams from across Bidvest Foodservice’s 22 depots around the UK, including chief executive Andrew Selley and members of the senior leadership team, are undertaking One’s 5 Litre Challenge. Staff members will test themselves to use just 5litres of water over 24 hours for all of their drinking, cooking and washing needs – an every day task for millions of people around the world without access to clean water. A stark difference from the 150litres of water an average person in the UK uses per day.

Bidvest Foodservice is also recruiting others in the industry including customers such as facility service provider ISS. Other activities include sponsored walks, cake sales and African-themed lunches, to name a few, and are taking place in the lead up to and during World Water Day on 22 March.

ISS will be challenging team members to take part in the 5 Litre Challenge as well as involving itself in the Give Water; Give Life campaign where it will be matching customer donations during Nutrition and Hydration Week this week.

Bidvest Foodservice’s head of sustainability, Shirley Duncalf, says the company hopes the initiatives will drive interest from customers to support the brand and fund further projects in Africa. “Our aim of the campaign is to see how much bigger we can make One’s initiatives with the support from others in the industry. Supporting One Drinks is something we’d love more businesses to consider – the goal is simple and the results are life-changing.”

Duncan Goose, founder of One, said: “There are still 663m people in the world without access to safe drinking water. Over 2m people die every year from waterborne diseases and most are children under 5 years old. By selling One Drinks and supporting Give Water Give Life, Bidvest Foodservice and its customers are helping us to make a real difference on the other side of the world. It’s that simple.

Over the last 10 years Bidvest Foodservice and its customers have helped to raise over £140,000 for water projects by supporting One Drinks, helping to transform 35,000 lives in sub-Saharan Africa.
