The UK branch of Amazon has now soft launched a ‘Food Service Equipment and Supplies’ category, as was rumoured earlier this year.

This should allow professional catering equipment to be listed separately from its domestic cousins.

The online giant is already listing 35,940 products in this category, which can be found underneath the Business, Industry and Science section.

Sub-sections comprise food and dish transport, food preparation equipment, food warmers, menu and check displayers, range hoods, restaurant furniture, steam tables and drop in wells and worktables and workstations.

Brands including Utopia, Argon Tableware and bar@drinkstuff have products within the category, while Nisbets and Nextday Catering Equipment Supplies are selling on the site too.

Some in the industry believe that Amazon itself may end up manufacturing and selling catering equipment.

It is thought that eventually the category will be rolled out in full to match Amazon USA’s ‘Restaurant Supplies & Food Service Equipment’ listing which includes cooking equipment, dishwashers, and refrigeration equipment.

This is part of the whole ‘business’ section on the US site comprising 18 categories. In its first 12 months, these categories collectively generated sales of $1bn.

Catering Insight reached out to Amazon but the company declined to comment.
