Temperatures are rising for online shoppers grabbing the latest bargains for Christmas, but that won’t trouble one of the most sophisticated retail warehouses in the UK – Amazon’s gigantic facilities in Gourock and Peterborough.
Staff kitchens at the company’s premises are now protected by Nobel Fire Systems’ K-Series fire suppression systems, ensuring that any risk of downtime at this busiest time of year is mimimised.
“Amazon is one of the world’s most dynamic and successful companies. Working with them in this way represents another important milestone in our own business development programme. Our approach is one of early fire detection and fast, effective suppression saves lives, plant and property. That’s why we continue to develop a range of services from risk-based analysis, consultation and design, through to final installation. Nobody can afford to be complacent when it comes to fire risk and safety issues because of the potentially devastating consequences,” said Ben Parker, commercial director of Nobel Fire Systems.
The Gourock warehouse installation came as a result of Allianz Insurance carrying out an inspection and recommending that a suitable system be fitted to both the canopy and to the extended ductwork.
Work to the canopy was carried out during the night by Nobel’s team of installation engineers to minimise disruption.
The extended ductwork protection posed interesting challenges not least because in this case it extended 6m vertically and installation was completed using a cherry picker in order to reach the extreme points.
The complexity of the ductwork protection installation meant that work took a week from start to completion and was carried out during the day by arrangement with the site facility manager at Amazon.
The installation at Amazon’s Peterborough warehouse kitchen facility was just as critical given that in any commercial kitchen, hot oils and naked flames heighten the potential risk of fire which can in a worse situation lead to the endangering of lives and substantial damage to property.
An additional factor is that these centers also provide warehousing and order-fulfillment for third-party sellers. Nobel worked closely with the specialist catering company, Maintaining Projects Ltd, on the installation.
