Catering equipment suppliers with a track record of selling into coffee and sandwich shops should have no fears of business slowing down.
A new market assessment update from research firm Key Note suggests a sector that it says has “boomed” over recent years remains in rude health.
It said there are currently more than 15,000 coffee shops in the UK, with the figure rising every week.
Chains such as Costa Coffee, Starbucks and Caffé Nero collectively make up 22% of the market, with independent outlets or small chains accounting for the rest.
“Many chains are currently pursuing confident expansion plans and displaying apparently unstoppable growth, seemingly unhindered by possible market saturation or by the effects of recession,” the company said.
Key Note said the ability of coffee shops to cater for most consumer tastes had heightened their appeal, adding that sandwich shops were “almost as popular”.
“As with coffee shops, the sector is split into chains and independents. Greggs and Subway dominate the chain sector, representing over 80% of the top 10 branded chains’ outlets,” the company said.
Key Note predicts a bright future for both coffee shops and sandwich shops. The number of top 10 branded coffee shops is expected to grow by more than 21% by 2017, while that of sandwich shops is forecast to see growth of 18.5%.
