Whitbread registers growth in tough economic times

Whitbread like-for-like revenues grew 4.2% in the second quarter of this year, with total sales including new outlets up 14.8%.

The UK’s largest hotel and restaurant group delivered a generally subdued trading update that highlighted growth in market share against the backdrop of continuing tough economic conditions.

“Whitbread has continued to deliver good sales growth with total sales up 14.8% in our second quarter. Our brands have outperformed in a tough economic climate, with like for like sales growth of 4.2% and we have continued our network expansion at Costa and Premier Inn,” said Andy Harrison, the group’s chief executive.

The group’s restaurant portfolio, which includes Costa, grew 8.6%. The coffee chain grew at 22.9% to £432 million.

The group opened 50 net new UK stores in the quarter, 39 in UK Retail and 11 in Costa Enterprises.
