ScoMac Catering Equipment has entered the Northern Irish market after rescuing P Nugent & Sons Ltd of Lurgan from administration.
Nugent’s ran into trouble last month due to trading difficulties and customer bad debts, but around 15 jobs will now be saved after ScoMac struck a deal with administrators Cavanagh Kelly last week.
Family-owned Nugent’s has been selling catering equipment for almost 30 years, serving as the sole distributor of Zanussi Professional in Northern Ireland and offering kit from brands such as Electrolux, Lincat, Robot Coupe and Victor Manufacturing.
The new business, which has been named ScoMac Nugents Ltd, will continue to service the established light equipment and consumable market as before, while a ScoMac Catering Equipment branch will be established in Lurgan to provide nationwide kitchen design, manufacture and installations.
The engineering division of ScoMac’s parent company, Unitech, is also set to benefit from the acquisition as the light equipment and consumables businesses complement the work it does in the food production sector and will give it showroom access.
“The acquisition of Nugent’s gives us the opportunity to save over 15 jobs and in time add more roles, plus a great platform for the next phase of growth for both the Unitech and ScoMac businesses,” said the company’s group managing director Nick Imlah.
Nugent’s is the third company that Livingstone-based ScoMac has integrated to its portfolio since its own business was bought out of administration by Unitech four years ago. It also has offices in Cambridgeshire and Northumberland as a result of acquiring Welequip and Stellex respectively. The company is aiming to exceed sales of £15m this year.
