On 14 June, Phil Alexander, MD of distributor Olive Branch Catering Equipment, took part in an Iron Man triathlon in Staffordshire as part of Gordon Ramsay’s GR100 team.
The course consisted of a 1.2mile swim in Chasewater reservoir and a 56mile bike ride through the countryside outside Lichfield, Burton-upon-Trent and across the Cannock Chase area. The concluding 13.1mile run started and finished at the historic Shugborough country estate.
Alexander commented: “Being a part of the Gordon Ramsey GR100 team was a very important task for me, as his personal charity supports not only Scottish Spina Bifida Association, the Louis Dundas Centre for Children’s Palliative Care, Action against Hunger and Meningitis Now but also Cancer Research, which I and the business try to raise awareness for. Cancer is a very cruel disease and one we need to try and eradicate.”
Olive Branch managed to raise £1,200 for the GR100 team charities and many of the sponsors came from suppliers within the industry.
Alexander reported that the race took place on a glorious day: “The swim for me was the most anxious part. I can swim very well but this is the main area where the unexpected can hit your body. When I saw the signs for the bike finish it gave me a buzz, but when I hopped off the bike, my legs gave way for a second and I realised the drive needed to complete the 13.1mile run!
“All local towns and village people were out in force to support us, and it really does help you along. When the finish line appeared the legs completely go, the emotion runs riot but success is phenomenal.
