Nottingham-based dealer Elya Catering Equipment has had its premises seriously damaged by a fire which broke out on the morning of 3 July.
The firm sells a wide range of equipment, from bain maries to pizza ovens, including the Lincat and Zanolli brands. Many appliances in the onsite warehouse were destroyed by the blaze, which is said to have started on the first floor of the premises.
Three fire engines from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue (NFRS) tackled the flames. Elya’s owner Hassan Basavci told local newspaper the Nottingham Post he believed the fire started at around 8am in a metal drum inside the inner courtyard of the business.
He said: “It’s had a huge effect to us. I am very upset because the equipment is not cheap. We have lost a lot of catering appliances and had massive damage.”
Fortunately nobody was injured, as no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
Basavci acknowledged: “At the end of the day we have to say things could have been worse. No one was hurt but the damage was major. Life is very important. It’s not nice to lose our products and money but if no one is hurt that is the main thing for us.”
He said there was lots of cardboard around from appliance packaging in the courtyard which could have contributed to the fire growing, adding: “We now have to sort out the damage and start cleaning the building and removing all the burnt equipment that was damaged.”
A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson also told the Nottingham Post: “The fire was located on the ground floor. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire – no one has been injured.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
