Marshall celebrates 40 years in business

With the 40th anniversary of Knaresborough-based distributor Marshall Catering Equipment approaching, Catering Insight caught up with owner Trevor Skinner to discover the secret of its durability.

How is the business performing currently and why?
The business is growing with more scheme work and one off sales. Our performance in the scheme work side of the business is superb; we offer brilliant packages with specifications, quotes to match design briefs and computer aided design (CAD) plans. We have a great understanding of scheme work and what’s needed to get a job done efficiently, on time and in budget.

What prompted the investment in a new website for Marshall?
We invested in the website because as the internet becomes more prominent in the day to day advertising of a business we needed to be up there with a site that could be our online shop window. We have a shop where we offer only the best equipment at fair prices; there are tabs in which you can get more information regarding the different services we offer.

When and why did you relocate from Wetherby to Knaresborough?
We moved to Knaresborough on 30 June 2014. This made sense, as it means shorter distances for the staff to travel and a more efficient building with cheaper rates. We are very happy in our new home and hope to be there for a long time!

What are the company’s current focuses?
Our focus is on supplying only the best quality equipment for our customers’ budgets in the north of England and offering our service and maintenance programme to all customers.

What recent projects you have undertaken?
We have recently completed several jobs including William & Victoria’s restaurant, West Park Hotel and Queen Ethelburga’s school, all in Harrogate.

Furthermore we outfitted catering facilities at Harrogate Ladies College where we had a week in the latter part of August to do the job, as the client had lets a week before and a week after.

So organising all the trades to work with each other to meet the deadline was a small challenge but we met it and the customer was left happy. [[page-break]]

Do you tend to stick to the same equipment manufacturers or are you looking to develop new relationships?
As founder members of ENSE we are keen to talk to as many suppliers of quality equipment as possible, as well as looking after our current supply chain.

What are Marshall Catering Equipment’s unique qualities?
We are an innovative and responsive one stop shop for all aspects of catering applications across the board, always giving prompt and responsive service.

What is the business’ strategy?
Our strategy is to develop our scheme work further, develop our supply chain partners and spread our abilities to all styles of catering equipment projects.

What do you see in store for the future?
After 40 years of surviving, striving and growing I would be very pleased if we can carry on as a family-run business with our founding core values being promoted – and 40 more successful years trading.
