Lockhart Catering Equipment has fired the latest shot in the battle for London’s restaurant business by rolling out a same-day delivery service.
The catering equipment and tableware supplier is guaranteeing London-based operators that they will receive items the same day they place their order, so long as they do it before the cut-off time of 12 noon.
Lockhart is charging £14.95 for the service, which promises delivery by 7pm across 15,000 catering products.
It said the service, which got underway several weeks ago, was a “first” for the catering equipment industry.
Paul Nieduszynski, Lockhart Catering Equipment’s recently-appointed managing director, says the move takes customer service and access to product to a new level.
“As a business, we constantly keep abreast of what our customers want. We have been operating a next-day service for a number of years; however, our customers were telling us that a same-day service would really help with their last minute product requirements — so this is exactly what we delivered.”
It is understood that the service is only available over the telephone and not currently on its website.
One customer that has taken advantage of the same-day delivery option already is One Aldwych Hotel in Covent Garden.
Daniel Taylor, purchasing supervisor at the hotel, called the £14.95 charge “extremely good value” after placing an order for shot glasses at short notice.
“We placed our order at around midday and our glasses were with us within a couple of hours,” he said.
Lockhart has not yet indicated if it intends to roll the service out to other cities, or whether it will only remain available to customers with London postcodes.
Last November, Stockport-based catering equipment supplier launched a same-day delivery service for customers in central Manchester in the run-up to the busy festive period.
It offered the service up until Christmas Eve, with orders placed before 2pm qualifying for same-day delivery.
