Dealers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will be recognised in the Catering Insight Awards Distributor of the Year – Rest of the UK honour, sponsored by DC Products, for the exemplary work they are carrying out in those regions, whether it is the supply and installation of equipment or a full-service commercial kitchen design.
The shortlisted candidates are therefore:
James Scott & Sons
It’s been a year since company founder Jim Scott passed away, which left the family and directors some challenges to overcome. However they have risen to the challenge admirably, completing projects for the Dakota Hotel, Glasgow, the Duart Castle Tearoom on the Isle of Mull, which posed access challenges as it was a 40-minute ferry ride from Oban, plus another remote installation at Invesnaid Hotel on east coast of Loch Lomond, where the firm had to battle Scottish winter weather.
Northern Ireland-based JD Catering’s main achievements this year have been the continued expansion of the business, adding two new engineers, securing an education board for service work, and increasing sales by 45%. It recently completed the Café Conor refurbishment, a famous café in the middle of Belfast. Plus the dealer bought a 2acre site to move its stainless steel fabrication to bigger premises. This had the added effect of creating more storage facilities for the distributor.
ScoMac Catering Equipment
ScoMac scored its first international project this year, designed and delivered a fine dining kitchen to Sun Swept Resorts in St Lucia. It also boosted its retail clientele, adding Waitrose to its customers. Two Principal Hayley Hotels outfits brought £800,000+ to the distributor’s coffers, while the £700,000 Novotel – Canary Wharf scheme meant working on the 37th,38th and 39th floors. ScoMac has made significant investments to upgrade IT and hire four apprentices in its joinery department.
Shine Food Machinery
Welsh dealer, Shine Food Machinery, has garnered praise for its project management, particularly of the recent Olympic Stadium project in London, which was so large it had to be carried out in two phases. Other recent endeavours were for Selfridge & Co, the Quod Restaurant & Bar in Oxford and the luxury Manor House Hotel in Castle Combe, Wiltshire. Having recruited heavily to grow to 58 employees, the dealer has also invested in energy efficiency and process efficiency measures.
Stephens Catering Equipment
With branches in Northern and Southern Ireland, as well as Scotland, Stephens Catering Equipment is growing year on year. In 2016 it added new showrooms and test kitchens to its Belfast and Balamena offices. Plus it invested £250,000 in new machines in its fabrication plant. Recent projects include a sixth outfit for Google, this time in its Dublin offices, as well as a scheme for Microsoft in Dublin and an induction kitchen for its latest Ramore Restaurants fit-out, Neptune & Prawn, in Portrush.
The electronic vote to choose the winner will open on Monday 31 October, when senior supplier representatives will receive an e-mail invite to participate.
