Two highly-rated chefs from the north have been crowned barbeque kings after going head-to-head in a professional cook-off hosted by catering supplies business Goodfellows.
Chris Finnigan, head chef at Newcastle’s boutique bowling alley Lane 7 and James Wilkinson, sous chef at the Michelin-starred Black Swan in North Yorkshire, along with members of their teams, felt the heat after their grilling techniques were put to the test.
The ‘Griller Warfare’ duel saw the chefs battle it out on two of Goodfellows’ Big Green Egg ceramic barbeques.
The challenge was to create a plate, tray or bucket of food grilled to perfection, matched with a stand-out cocktail.
Managing director Valda Goodfellow said: “Our first Griller Warfare event turned out to be everything we envisioned — messy, tense, very competitive and lots of fun watching two incredibly talented chefs in action.”
Lane 7, which focused on casual food, edged the contest but the judges were so impressed by what the Black Swan cooked up that it was also awarded a Big Green Egg.
“The Big Green Egg is a really versatile piece of kit which is not only a barbeque but also can be used for smoking, slow cooking and even cooking pizzas,” continued Goodfellow.
“It is the product that chefs rave about and we thought it would be a great challenge for them to come up with a knock-out dish as well as see how competitive they got.”
Goodfellows, which employs 16 people, also launched its first ‘Black Monday’ at the event, where offers included discounts on clearance stock and deals on current ranges.
