An education catering provider is preparing for September’s free school meals initiative by appointing two staff members to train school cooks in getting the best out of their combi ovens.
Hampshire County Council Catering Services (HC3S), which serves around 45,000 meals a day to 445 primary schools in the county, created the specialist posts to ensure kitchens get the most out of their equipment when the scheme begins.
Sharon Brockway and Anna Wades have been taking part in training at MKN’s test facility in Cannock, as the German manufacturer has already supplied around 200 of its HansDampf combis to HC3S.
Through the training, they will be able to write programmes specific to HC3S menus for consistency across the estate. The skills they pick up should also cross over onto other manufacturers’ ovens.
Wayne Bennett, UK projects director for MKN, said: “Employing two in-house combi specialists to ensure the provision of the free school meals is as stress free as possible and that capital investment is used to its maximum potential is definitely an industry-leading step for them.”
